Local Lions Clubs and Lions Clubs International Foundation Fund Critical Cataract Surgery Equipment

Lions Clubs and Lions Clubs International Foundation make a donation to a new Centurion machine for cataract surgery at LWDH.

The Lions Clubs of Northwestern Ontario, in partnership with the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), are proud to announce a transformative investment of $142,400 to fund a second Alcon Centurion cataract surgery machine and ophthalmology instruments at Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH).

This investment will significantly expand cataract surgery capacity at LWDH, helping to address cataract wait times.

Holiday 50/50 Winner Takes Home $51,880 – Largest Jackpot in 4 Years

Mark Parker of Kenora celebrates winning the Holiday 50/50

On New Year’s Eve, Mark Parker of Kenora, ON was on the road to Winnipeg when his phone rang with some unexpected news. Just moments before, he and his travelling companions had been talking about the Holiday 50/50 draw and the large jackpots around the province, and then the call came.

His first reaction: “Oh for crying out loud.” Mark thought the jackpot had ended up around $44,000, “or something like that.” When it truly sank in that he was the winning ticket holder of the Holiday 50/50 draw and was taking home $51,880 – the largest Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation jackpot in four years, he said, “Oh you just made my year!”

Giving Tuesday: $36,970 raised for Emergency Department

After the chaotic retail days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, donors to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation’s Tree of Life Appeal were tremendously generous on Giving Tuesday. A total of 195 donations were made – online, by mail, by phone, and in person – more than double last year’s participation. Additionally, every challenge that was issued from community partners was reached, unlocking a combined $9,000 in matching donations from Lake Country Financial Group ($1,000), Kenora Optometry Clinic ($3,000) and Northern Hearing Inc. ($5,000).

Altogether on Tuesday, December 2, $36,970 was raised towards an overall goal of $60,000 to support the purchase of a video laryngoscope for the Emergency Department at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

Honouring Anchilla’s Legacy During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

On September 13, the 4th Annual Ladies Open in Memory of Anchilla McDonald brought together 34 teams for a sold-out tournament; a true testament to how much this event has grown into a beloved community tradition.
Over just four years, the Ladies Open has raised more than $90,000 in support of women’s health at Lake of the Woods District Hospital — helping fund vital equipment including a new Coronis Uniti (Barco Monitor), funding directed to support the new Mammography Unit, and now, the Merge CADstream for MRI.

RBC Foundation Boosts Training at Lake of the Woods District Hospital

On Wednesday May 14, 2025, Sheri Lang, RBC Community Manager, and RBC staff from Dryden and Kenora, visited the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Training Classroom. This wasn’t a training session, but a celebration — the RBC Foundation generously granted $10,000 to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital to purchase four new Intravenous training devices and a Pediatric MATT Auscultation Trainer.

A Ripple of Strength, Hope, and Giving

Lisa’s strength has sparked something incredible. Her workplace family at the Kenora Jail rallied around her, hosting a fundraiser and even shaving their heads in solidarity. With her trademark spirit and humility, Lisa has chosen to donate the $2,120 raised to Forms of Hope. The Forms of Hope is a special fund through the LWDH Foundation that provides support for local patients undergoing cancer treatment at LWDH.

Celebrating the Grand Opening of the Diagnostic Imaging Centre of Excellence

Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH), together with the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation held a small gathering and ribbon cutting on Aug 30 to celebrate a milestone occasion. The Diagnostic Imaging department in Kenora’s hospital has evolved into a new, state-of-the-art Diagnostic Imaging Centre of Excellence. This incredible milestone for local health care will ensure patients from across
Northwestern Ontario have access to world-class diagnostic imaging close to home. The Centre now offers nine imaging modalities, with the most recent additions being a state-of-the-art Mammography Unit, breast Ultrasound and Biopsy Suite and now Kenora’s first ever MRI machine.
