A Gift That Builds Community: Moncrief Construction Generously Supports the Beyond the Scan Campaign

“For us, there was never any question about supporting the Beyond the Scan campaign,” said Alf Moncrief, Owner of Moncrief Construction Limited (MCL). “When you think about our families, our co-workers, and our community, it’s clear how important it is to have the best facilities available when someone is in need. Our donation was made to help ensure that kind of care is here, at our local hospital.”

Founded in 1967 by Harold and Margaret Moncrief, MCL began as a small hydro and telephone line business. Over the decades, it has grown into one of Northwestern Ontario’s largest and most diverse construction companies. Today, MCL is a general contractor specializing in power and communications line construction, industrial electrical work, heavy civil projects, and aggregate production. With over 180 year-round employees, MCL has grown significantly, yet continues to stay rooted in its strong family values.

That commitment to family and community is reflected in the leadership team. Alf and Jo-Anne Moncrief, together with Rob Perchuk and Derek Grandbois, live and work in Kenora, raising their families while contributing to the community alongside them. “When we think about our own family, there have been so many times when it would have been so much easier to get scans done here in Kenora instead of traveling to another city,” said Jo-Anne. “But it’s not just about us — it’s about the whole community. Having this service close to home will make things far more convenient and less stressful. And in an emergency, being able to get scans right away could truly make all the difference.”

In addition to their most recent $100,000 gift to the Beyond the Scan campaign, MCL has a long history of giving back to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, previously supporting projects such as the hematology analyzer and the earlier CT scanner. Their generosity extends beyond healthcare, with ongoing support for local youth sports programs, surrounding First Nations tournaments, the Kenora Bass International (KBI), the Terry Fox Run, 4FoxsSake, and the Lake of the Woods Community Foundation.

Like many others in the community, they are excited for the day the new MRI becomes fully operational. “Seeing projects completed is one of my favorite parts of our work,” said Alf. “And I can’t wait for that milestone to be reached with this new diagnostic imaging equipment.”
