March truly was a lucky month for Don and Shirley Carbert from Kenora.
On Friday, March 27, they received a phone call telling them they’d won the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation’s 50/50 March Grand Prize Jackpot of $18,567.50. They were elated, but couldn’t quite believe the news, as they had just won the second Early Bird Draw of $1,000 one week prior.
Don couldn’t believe it when he got the call: “No kidding…that’s unbelievable!” he said.
His wife Shirley was even more astonished: “I don’t believe you! What?!?” And then, “So now you want our picture taken. I got to go get my hair done!”
Don purchased early in March to guarantee he’d be eligible for all 3 draws last month, and he was the first person in the LWDHF 50/50 history to win twice in a month, including the jackpot draw. “Wow, what a shock,” he said after taking in the news. “Oh this is wonderful – thank you!” added Shirley.
The LWDHF 50/50 is a monthly charitable lottery that raises funds to support capital medical equipment at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Tickets can be purchased by anyone 18 years or older in Ontario. Grand Prize Draws are 50% of sales and are awarded each month. Tickets purchased prior to the deadline for each draw, including Early Birds, are eligible for all subsequent draws that month.
Recently, proceeds from the draws have helped fund equipment at the Hospital such as:
- A Bookwalter Retractor Set, Laparoscopic Telescopes and a Video Endoscope for Surgical Services and
- Vital Signs Monitors across the Hospital
In the upcoming months, proceeds will support enhancements in Nutrition and Food Services including a new Rational Oven and Orca Food Digester.
