Kenora Dragon Tamers Support Advanced Mammography and Chemotherapy Equipment

The Kenora Dragon Tamers, a local dragon boat team made up of breast cancer survivors and supporters, recently donated $3,750 to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation to help fund new, advanced, mammography equipment. In addition, they provided another gift of $1,250 to fund essential chemotherapy equipment.

For nearly 20 years, the Kenora Dragon Tamers have combined paddling, community spirit, and advocacy to raise awareness and support for those affected by breast cancer. What began as a small group paddling together has grown into a charitable organization that has contributed nearly $60,000 to local cancer care, from funding treatment chairs and telehealth upgrades to preparing comfort pillows and bags, along with other resources for patients. Their most recent gifts reflect the group’s deep connection to mammography services in Kenora. Many members remember when women had to travel to Winnipeg for scans, and some were involved in the original fundraising that brought the hospital its first mammography machine years ago.

“Back in those days, it was embarrassing to talk about breast screening or getting your breasts checked. It’s so different now and much easier to talk about.” – Diane Pochailo, Treasurer, Kenora Dragon Tamers

Having advanced diagnostic equipment available locally means fewer trips to Thunder Bay or Winnipeg and quicker, more accurate results for patients. “Almost everyone in our community has been touched by cancer,” said Susan Garneys, President, Kenora Dragon Tamers. “This new equipment makes an enormous difference. The results you get now are much more explanatory and detailed and they give you very specific info, which means you really know what’s going on with your result. Being well informed helps tremendously.” While best known for their dragon boat paddling, the Kenora Dragon Tamers emphasize that they are first and foremost a support network for anyone impacted by breast cancer.

“We invite women to come and join us. We’re not just a paddling group. We’re a breast cancer support group and even if you can’t paddle, you can still be part of the team, and enjoy the camaraderie.” – Susan Garneys, President, Kenora Dragon Tamers
