Local Unions Generously Support ‘Difference Maker’

When Judy Bain, President of CUPE Local 1781, became aware of the Beyond The Scan Campaign, and its goal to fund a fully-operational Diagnostic Imaging Centre of Excellence at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, she immediately knew how needed and valuable it would be to the community.

“I approached our members about making a $5,000 donation,” she said, “and, to be honest, I was blown away by the overwhelmingly positive response rate that I received. There were no questions – it was just ‘who do we make the cheque out to?’ I think it just goes to show you how much we all want these diagnostic services here in our community.”

She mentioned to her daughter Ashley (President of CUPE Local 822), somewhat jokingly, that their Local should also make a $5,000 donation, and not only did they step up to the plate, but so did CUPE Local 3634, whose members also made a $5,000 donation, for a combined total of $15,000.

“Having an MRI, a new CT scanner, new mammography equipment – it’ll be a difference-maker,” she said. “We are so remote and driving 6 hours to get an MRI – that takes a toll on the patient, and also their families. Having this equipment in our backyard is going to be so amazing.”

“It is so heartwarming to see our community come together to support this cause the way they have. It’s a positive and feel-good story and we are honoured to be a part of it.”

* All donations made to the Beyond The Scan Campaign between Feb 12 – Apr 30, 2025, up to a maximum of $2M, will be generously matched, dollar-for-dollar, by the FDC Foundation.
