One of the perks of choosing the winning number of someone from a small town; when you can’t reach them at home, you can track them down at work!

Rick Savage of Kenora, who has been working part time at Lake of the Woods Sports Headquarters since his retirement was in shock when he realized why LWDHF was calling him at work…especially because his initial thoughts were he was being notified as a close contact and then possibly a crank call!

“Oh my god!  I’ve never won anything in my LIFE!’’

Rick’s ticket number I-5241445 was drawn at 11 a.m. on April 30th making him our 9th winner of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation online 50/50 taking home $88,255.

Rick was happy to support the LWDHF online 50/50 as he knows the money is all going to a great local cause and he will continue to support.  When it comes to what he’ll do with his recent windfall, he wasn’t quite sure but had one thought…of course, we did only give him an hour to let it sink in before posing the question!

“We get to this point in your life when we got the time and maybe we have a few extra dollars to do some travelling and you can’t go anywhere.  So hopefully that’s going to happen now.”

Rick and his wife Marg who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year have 3 boys and 7 grandkids all here in Kenora which help keep them busy.   We hope that you’re able to travel  soon and enjoy your big win!

Congratulations Rick!

THANK YOU DINGWALL GROUP

for your support in online 50/50

On August 16th, 2020 at 11 a.m. Tiffany Dyck, of Keewatin, Ontario became $47,185 richer in the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation online 50/50 raffle.  Her lucky number A-3136419 what drawn electronically in the inaugural raffle.

It was an easy decision for Tiffany to chose to support the LWDHF 50/50 .  ”It was mostly a ‘why not?’ Like, twenty dollars out of my pocket, but it’s going to help the entire community in the long run.”  Tiffany and her husband own a local business, Cottage Essentials and have lived in Keewatin for the past 6 years.  She says moving here from another province has been the best decision they’ve ever made as they love this town and the people in it.  The pair were planning on doing renovations to their home this fall and with Tiffany’s new found winnings it will help those renovations go a little faster.  When asked how they plan on celebrating Tiffany said ‘We’ll probably be ripping out a wall in the next few weeks!’.  Congratulations again going out to our first LWDHF 50/50 winner!

Funds raised through our new online monthly 50/50 will help in the purchase of medical equipment so that your hospital has what it needs to take care of you! Your chance to win supports your hospital and we are thrilled to announce that Tiffany Dyck from Keewatin is our first lucky winner of $47,185! Next month, it could be YOU!

“The support and response we received to our month one launch is overwhelming and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results! It truly is an example of the power our community has when they come together! $5, $10, and $20 tickets grew the jackpot to $47,185…that and the $1000 kick off generously put up by the Dingwall Group!  Thank you!” Jess Rheault, Executive Director-LWDHF.

On September 16th, 2020 at 11 a.m. Carleigh Paul of Kenora, Ontario won $54, 468 in the Lake  of the Woods District Hospital Foundation online 50/50 raffle.  Her lucky number B-4921836 was drawn electronically and she answered the call on the second ring to find out she was our lucky winner!

Carleigh and her partner, who got engaged two weeks ago are excited to start planning their wedding with more money to splurge. The pair have also been house hunting and this will definitely help.   “It’s important that we support our local hospital, my whole family has worked there forever and this is an added bonus to be winning this 50/50”.

Carleigh had this to say about future draws: “You’re helping a good cause, supporting the local hospital.  I’m sure that everybody has some connection to the hospital and you can win a significant amount of money! This is life changing!”

The government does not fund medical equipment so money raised through our monthly online 50/50 will help in the purchase of that ensuring that your hospital has what it needs to take care of you! Your chance to win supports your hospital and we are excited to be awarding Carleigh Paul $54,468 as our winner of Draw #2 in the LWDHF online 50/50!   Next month, it could be YOU!

Curt Hendrickson was ‘elated’ when he received the phone call shortly after 11 a.m. on October 16th, 2020 from LWDHF Executive Director Jess Rheault….who being from a small town, has known Curt for years.
“Hi there, is this Curt Hendrickson?
“Yes it is.”
“Otherwise known as Purolator Guy?”
“Oh hahaha hi Jess….”
“Do you know why I would be calling you shortly after 11am on draw day?”
“I didn’t win did I?!?!?”
“YOU WON! YOU ARE OUR LUCKY WINNER!”
“Unbelievable! Oh my god! This is not a prank?!?! This is not a prank?!?!”

Curt’s number C-6064110 was drawn electronically and he is now $57,402 richer!

“Once I knew Jess wasn’t joking, the first thing I thought about was how I would spend some money.  A snowmobile.  For my staycation!” Hendrickson is a loyal supporter of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation 50/50 draw since its inception and chooses to only purchase locally when it comes to raffle tickets.  “It’s great to support the hospital and local causes.  I buy any hockey draws, from sports teams, service groups-it’s all I ever buy and I will continue to buy for the hospital 50/50. It’s nice to know where the money goes…and it stays right here to help the hospital.”

After learning of her winnings Shelley was able to celebrate with her daughter and grandson and plans on celebrating with her fiancé when the pandemic is over with a once in a lifetime trip!

“Once Covid is over my fiancée and I are going to fly to Paris.  It’s always been number one on my bucket list and only seemed like a pipe dream….it’s not a pipe dream anymore”.

Shelley encourages anyone thinking of purchasing tickets in the upcoming draws to do so. “Do it!  It never crossed my mind that it could happen, but it can happen, it really can!”

How does winning $186,335 from LWDHF’s 50/50 make you feel?

“Is this real, I’m shaking. I think I’m going to be sick.”

That’s exactly how Shannon Cameron, originally from Wabaseemoong First Nation and currently living in Kenora, felt when we called her.   Shannon is our 5th winner of the highest jackpot ever, taking home $186,335.  Her number E-4720723 was drawn at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 16th.

“This win means a whole lot to me, I can be out of debt, I can help my family, that’s the main thing.  Other than that, I can’t even process this whole thing right now”.  Thanks to  purchases from supporters of our 50/50 one lucky winner’s life is changed in a split moment and at the same time our hospital benefits in a huge way.

“It means a whole lot to be able to help the hospital, especially during a pandemic so I’m  happy about that so they can help Kenora and surrounding communities.”

“Hi, I think I have the winning number in the 50/50”.

And that he did!  Jonathan Ho of Sioux Lookout is the latest winner of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation online 50/50, taking home $155,155.  Jonathan called into the LWDHF offices shortly after his number F-4877858 was drawn at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 29th.

“I don’t know if it’s actually sunk in yet!  I feel like I should just drive down to K-town right now!”

Jonathan has been living and working in Sioux Lookout for 6 years, currently as a grades 3/4 teacher at Sioux Mountain Public School.

“I’ve purchased tickets for the last couple draws and I see on social medial all the time that K-Town has this triple digit, sunshine list size draw and I thought wow, why not? I have a buddy who lives in Kenora and we’re always like I’m going to win, no I’m going to win.  It never came around until today! I don’t think he believed me!’

In a short moment one lucky winner’s life is changed  and thanks to  all purchases from our supporters our hospital and healthcare in Northwestern Ontario benefits in a huge way.  When asked about what he might do with his winnings, reality was still sinking in but Jonathon knew one thing for sure:

“I have NO clue!  I’m going to buy all my buddies, McDonalds.  McDonalds on me.”

You know everybody’s talking about your 50/50 draw when you call the winner, tell them who you are and her immediate response is: “Shut up, shut up, shut up!”

For longtime friends and Kenora residents,  Lani Sheldon and Greg Rapinda, their time to win was destined to come.  Lani and Greg have been purchasing tickets in local lottery’s together for 15 years and were happy to share in the wealth together.  Their number G-6973549 was drawn at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 26th making them the 7th winners of the Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation online 50/50 splitting the jackpot of $98,920.

Both Greg and Lani were excited for their chance to win  and support their local hospital.

“I feel great about it going back to the hospital” says Greg and Lani having worked for 4 years as an RN on 2nd at LWDH understands the impact of supporting local healthcare.  “Keeping equipment and services updated at the hospital is important so that people don’t have to travel to receive care”.

When it came to how they wanted to spend their new found winnings, Greg is excited to add a new big screen tv to his home and possibly a new quad with a plow.  Lani and her husband had been mulling around the idea of a new camper or looking into potential investments in Kenora-however their 3 young boys might have ‘other’ ideas in mind when they get home.

Congratulations Lani and Greg!

“Every raffle ticket we’ve ever bought has been considered a donation.  So this is exciting!”

Gloria George of Nestor Falls, said a day later it still hadn’t sunk in that her ticket number H-4117111 was drawn at 11 a.m. on March 31st making her the 8th winner of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation online 50/50  taking home $90,705.   Gloria will split the winnings with her daughter who purchased the ticket with her.

Being able to support Lake of the Woods District Hospital with the purchase of her 50/50 ticket means a lot to Gloria after her mother spent quite some time as a patient battling cancer.

“We really appreciated how well mom was looked after, you know it’s a hard thing to go through and the staff made her feel as good as she could be”.

The care and compassion received from staff within the hospital has never been forgotten and has inspired the couple to continue to give back through donation and now buying 50/50!

Gloria and Wayne run Helliar’s Resort in Nestor Falls, Ontario and hope to use some of their winnings to complete a few projects around the resort that they weren’t thinking they could afford this year.  When it came to some things they’d like to treat themselves to, they plan on buying new seats for the boat and when travel is allowed,  Gloria would like to take a dream trip to Scotland.

Congratulations Gloria!
