Peter and Traut Barber – A Legacy of Giving and Community
When Peter and Traut moved to the Minaki area in 1974, they not only found a new home but also built a legacy that continues to impact the community today. Originally from Winnipeg, Peter cherished his memories of his grandfather’s cottage in Minaki, purchased in 1909. Upon starting their life together, Peter and Traut chose to settle in Minaki, venturing into tourism in 1980 by establishing a family-run resort which has grown to nine lake front cottages that provide a haven for guests seeking the serenity of the great outdoors.
The couple raised two sons while balancing work between Kenora and the resort. As they grew older, Peter and Traut decided to focus their efforts on managing the camp full-time. They retired from their jobs in Kenora to embrace the tranquility of the Minaki wilderness. Their son and daughter-in-law have since taken over the family business, but Peter and Traut remain involved.
Peter and Traut’s contributions to the community extend beyond their business: their philanthropic spirit is equally inspiring. They have been actively involved in the Minaki Foundation with its purpose of enhancing the Minaki community, fund raising for the Terry Fox Foundation with its focus on Cancer Research and over the past 25 years, they have also generously donated to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation. Their support for the LWDH Foundation has been particularly meaningful, as they recognize the importance of accessible and high-quality healthcare for the people of Kenora and the surrounding areas.
Peter challenges everyone who can to donate in whatever way they can: “When you donate to the LWDH Foundation, you’re giving to something that benefits everyone, not just one specific group.” Through her previous work as a homecare nurse, Traut also recognizes the value of having good medical care available at the Hospital for everyone.
Traut’s dedication to health and wellness is also evident in her personal life. During the summer months, she holds stretch classes on the deck at their home by the Winnipeg River, inviting guests and locals to join her in staying active while enjoying the beauty around them. In addition to her passion for fitness, Traut is an avid traveler and hiker, always eager to explore new destinations. Wherever they go, Peter and Traut cherish the opportunity to return home to Minaki where they can spend time with their family, including their grandchildren, who now enjoy the same wilderness that has been such an integral part of their lives.
Peter and Traut’s dedication to their community, both through their business and charitable contributions, serves as an inspiring example of how one couple’s love for their home and commitment to giving back can create a lasting legacy. With their children now leading the family business and grandchildren enjoying the outdoor life in Minaki, the Barbers are passing on their values of generosity and community service. The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation is deeply grateful for their unwavering support and the positive impact they continue to make on enhancing health care, at home.
