In health care, the old saying “practice makes perfect” can be better written as “practice makes ongoing excellence in patient care”. Rural hospitals are challenged to keep their practitioners’ skills fresh and up-to-date, especially around the area of acute care. Regular practice of critical care skills also reduces adverse patient events due to errors. Healthcare providers, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, respiratory therapists, and students at Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) can now practice lifesaving skills beneficial to the Emergency Department, acute care, Operating Room and Intensive Care Unit.
The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation (LWDHF) is thrilled to announce a $20,000 donation from the RBC Foundation to support the acquisition of a new MegaCode Kelly at LWDH. MegaCode Kelly is an advanced life support manikin that will revolutionize our training capabilities.
MegaCode Kelly is not just a manikin; it’s a cutting-edge tool designed to simulate a wide array of pre-hospital emergency scenarios with remarkable realism. From advanced airway management to intricate IV therapy techniques, MegaCode Kelly will be instrumental in equipping our healthcare professionals with the skills they need to save lives effectively. This new equipment replaces a 20-year-old, outdated manikin.
“As we navigate changing and emerging healthcare challenges, we at RBC believe that investing in the development and upskilling of nurses is critical to improving the quality of patient care and patient outcomes,” said Kim Ulmer, RBC Regional President. We’re honoured to continue to support our resilient and compassionate healthcare workers who take care of us in our deepest times of need.”
Using the SimPad PLUS technology, the hospital educator can select specific learning modules that present CPR, ACLS, NBC, trauma, and bleeding control scenarios. This investment comes at a pivotal time, as we celebrate and shine a spotlight on the incredible nurses at the LWDH during National Nursing Week. Nurses play a crucial role in directly impacting the lives of patients. Through their care, compassion and expertise, they contribute to positive changes in the health and well-being of individuals.
The challenge to deliver continuous and consistent quality patient care requires proper training, accurate assessments, interventions, and clinical decision-making skills to ensure the best patient outcomes. Jennifer Young, Clinical Educator at LWDH, explains the importance of a new MegaCode Kelly: “By incorporating consistent simulation scenarios available with the MegaCode Kelly, our local instructors can easily integrate simulation into their clinical training, helping learners make and correct their clinical errors without adverse consequences. This is especially important for rural hospitals like LWDH, as we do not have the same volume of critical care scenarios to keep skills sharp.”
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the RBC Foundation for their belief in our mission and their dedication to making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve. Together, we are strengthening the foundation of healthcare excellence in our community. Thank you, RBC Foundation, for your invaluable partnership in our journey towards a healthier and safer tomorrow!
