“A Legacy of Love: Sally Kendall’s Journey of Giving Back”
Sally Kendall credits her father for giving her the “Best Gift Ever” when he moved their family to Kenora from the northern USA more than 40 years ago. This love affair extended to the waters and wilderness of Minaki as the family acquired a cottage and spent time there.
For the past seven years, Sally has been a steadfast monthly donor to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) Foundation. Her generosity, however, extends back even further. In 2015, Sally experienced the devastating loss of her son, William Gibson, who passed away unexpectedly from a myocardial event, leading to a tragic drowning accident at his beloved Minaki cabin. In the wake of this loss, Sally found comfort in the outpouring of support as many friends and relatives chose to make donations in William’s memory, further strengthening her connection to the hospital and its mission.
Sally’s connection to Kenora runs deep. For over four decades, she has co-owned and managed Gunn Lake Lodge, a serene Minaki resort nestled in the heart of the Winnipeg River System. The lodge has become a sanctuary for family and friends who gather there to enjoy the natural beauty and adventure it offers. Her children and grandchildren have inherited her love for the outdoors, with one son and daughter-in-law even choosing the lodge as the venue for their wedding.
A retired real estate agent in Kenora, Sally’s giving philosophy is simple yet profound: contribute what you can. Whether it’s the price of an ice cream cone, a latte, or a movie ticket, Sally believes that every little bit helps. Her consistent donations to the hospital are a testament to this belief.

While her family hasn’t relied on the services of Lake of the Woods District Hospital often, beyond the births of her three children, Sally remains deeply grateful for its presence. She recognizes the hospital as a lifeline for both local residents and the many visitors who enjoy Kenora and the surrounding region. Her donations help fund critical equipment and services that touch the lives of so many.
These days, Sally divides her time between Minaki, Kenora, and her winter home in Texas. At her Kenora home, she finds joy in her expansive garden, particularly in the peaceful act of deadheading flowers—a task she finds incredibly relaxing. Even now, she continues to enjoy the “Best Gift Ever” by giving back to the community she loves. The LWDH Foundation is deeply grateful to Sally for her ongoing support which reflects her lifelong connection to Kenora and her enduring commitment to its people and its future.
