Beyond the Scan Campaign Surpasses Goal of $8.5 million — Raising $9,522,151 to Advance Local Healthcare
Kenora, ON — The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation is thrilled to announce the final total raised through the Beyond The Scan Capital Campaign: an incredible $9,522,151 — made possible by the community, for the community.
At the core of the campaign was the intent to bring Kenora’s first-ever MRI to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, along with a new CT scanner, and advanced mammography equipment.
What began as an ambitious plan to bring life-saving diagnostic equipment to Kenora quickly became something more: a shared investment in health, in the community, and in future generations. The campaign’s success belongs to everyone — local residents, families, seasonal visitors, regional partners, businesses, schools, charitable foundations and service clubs — who stepped forward with generosity, urgency, and heart.
Central to the success of the campaign was the FDC Foundation’s offer to match up to $2M in donations made between February 12 and April 30, 2025. Their generosity inspired hundreds of donations from across Northwestern Ontario and beyond, and was the catalyst that ignited the campaign’s incredible momentum.
In a celebratory moment outside the hospital, LWDH Foundation Board members, members of the Campaign Cabinet and Diagnostic Imaging team at LWDH flipped over a series of signs to reveal the grand total — a joyful and emotional milestone that marked the power of what is possible when our community comes together.
“The community rose to the challenge — and quickly,” said Board Chair Ashley Hendy. “This isn’t just about equipment. It’s about ensuring that people we love have access to the very best care, right here at home.”
What Is Being Made Possible – Thanks to Donations
The $9.5M raised is already transforming care at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Funds will be used for:
- Kenora’s first-ever MRI machine – will be installed soon and will be operational by the Fall of 2025. Construction is well underway to build the MRI suite, with steel beam reinforcements complete, the new concrete flooring poured, and a chiller installed on the Hospital roof. The MRI, once operational, will reduce the need for long travel, reduce wait times, and enable faster, more accurate diagnoses.
- CT Scanner Replacement — The hospital’s nearly decade-old CT scanner will soon be replaced. The Diagnostic Imaging team is preparing to issue an Request for Proposal this winter to acquire the most suitable technology available.
- An advanced Mammography Unit – Installed in November 2024, this system offers enhanced imaging capabilities, including Tomosynthesis, Contrast-Enhanced Imaging, Stereotactic Biopsy, and AI-assisted diagnostics, enabling earlier and more precise detection of breast cancer.
- $3.5M in upgrades in multiple departments through the Excellence Fund. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community, the additional $1 million raised beyond the original $8.5 million goal is enabling $3.5 million in upgrades across multiple hospital departments through the Excellence Fund. Of this total, $1 million is dedicated to the urgently-needed replacement of the Central Monitoring System. This critical technology enhances patient safety by allowing care teams to continuously monitor vital signs in real time across the Emergency Department, ICU, 3E, Surgical Services, and Maternity.
The success of the Beyond the Scan Campaign was made possible by the generosity and commitment of so many. Whether through a personal gift, a fundraiser, a major donation, or by inspiring others to give, this was a collective achievement. Together, hundreds came forward with a shared goal: to strengthen local healthcare for today and for future generations – thank you!
Every single dollar counted. Every gift mattered. The Beyond the Scan Campaign proved what we already knew: when our community is called to care, we answer — together.
