The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation is proud to announce a leadership gift of $500,000 towards the Beyond the Scan Campaign from Bryce and Nicki Douglas. Their extraordinary support, pledged in the late summer during the campaign’s early planning stages, exemplifies visionary leadership and a deep commitment to transforming diagnostic imaging services at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH).
The Douglas Family’s connection to Lake of the Woods dates back more than a century. Theirs has been a multi-generational tale of joyous summers spent by the lake and a steadfast commitment to the community’s well-being. Their pledge to the LWDH Foundation today reflects yet again their deep appreciation for the community and their belief in the importance of investing in local health care.
“This community has been part of our family for generations,” said Bryce Douglas. “Supporting the hospital and helping improve access to vital health care services is one of the most meaningful ways we can give back. We are proud to be part of a project that will benefit so many people and leave a legacy in the place we love.”
As is true for all hospitals across Ontario, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital must depend on the generosity of its residents to meet the critical equipment and technology needs necessary to deliver state-of-the art care for the community it serves.
“We celebrate Bryce and Nicki Douglas for their vision in recognizing the tremendous impact their contribution makes possible, for stepping forward at a time when their support means so much, and for allowing us to share their story to inspire others to follow their lead,” said Mira Trebilcock, Executive Director of LWDH Foundation.
The Douglas Family’s support comes at a pivotal time for LWDH as the hospital strives to enhance and modernize its Diagnostic Imaging Department. The hospital plans include a substantial investment in support of essential imaging technology, including a new mammography unit, to better serve patients in Kenora and the surrounding areas.
Honoring Leadership Philanthropy
In recognition of this remarkable gift, the hospital’s new Mammography Suite will be named The Douglas Family Mammography Suite, honoring their long-standing commitment to ensuring quality health care in the Kenora region.
The newly renovated Mammography Suite features the state-of-the-art Siemens Mammography B Brilliant unit, the most advanced mammography technology on the market. Now fully operational, the unit performed its first patient imaging on Friday, November 22nd, 2024.
The new unit offers enhanced services such as digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography), contrast-enhanced imaging, and stereotactic biopsies.
“With these enhanced services, this equipment will significantly improve breast health imaging and align with the province’s expanded screening recommendations,” noted Dr. Catherine Murray, applauding the investment in local diagnostic services.
Manager of Diagnostic Imaging, Sean Hailstone, added that these new offerings will result in more comprehensive breast care for the region. “With this cutting-edge technology, we can deliver vital diagnostic services closer to home, improving access to timely and accurate care for our residents,” Hailstone stated.
LWDH President and CEO Cheryl O’Flaherty emphasized the significance of this investment. “The Douglas Family gift is a powerful example of how philanthropy can drive positive change in the community,” she commented. “Their generosity ensures that patients in our region have access to the best diagnostic tools available, improving health outcomes for years to come.”
With the generosity of donors like the Douglas Family, the Beyond the Scan Campaign continues to push forward in its mission to bring the latest in diagnostic imaging technology to Kenora, ensuring that residents have access to world-class care close to home.
