When Charlotte McDonald of Kenora answered the phone to learn she’d won the June Grand Prize Jackpot in the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation’s monthly 50/50 lottery, her first reaction was disbelief.
“This isn’t a crank call, is it?” she asked.
Moments later, as the news began to sink in that she was taking home $23,500 with winning ticket #1120030636, her excitement took over.
“Oh my goodness. That’s wonderful!” she said.
Charlotte shared that she has never won anything like this before, making the surprise even sweeter.
Charlotte is also proud to be among the first supporters to become a “Legend” by subscribing to the Foundation’s new monthly 50/50 ticket program. The recently launched subscription option automatically purchases tickets each month, ensuring supporters never miss a chance to win, while continuing to support local healthcare.

The first purchase Charlotte made with her winnings? A brand-new dog bed for her beloved companion.
“It’s such a fitting first purchase,” said Trebilcock. “Our June campaign celebrated the incredible work of local animal shelters, so hearing that Charlotte chose to spoil her dog first made everyone smile. We’re also thrilled that our partnerships with the Kenora Cat Shelter and A Dog’s Life Fostering Network Kenora helped bring more attention to pets looking for homes. After months without inquiries, three cats have now received adoption applications.”
The excitement continues throughout July. Subscribers who become Legends are automatically eligible to win an additional $500 on top of each $1,000 Early Bird Prize during July and August. With four Early Bird Draws taking place over the two months, subscribers have even more opportunities to win.
The subscription option also offers added convenience for seasonal residents. Once a subscription is purchased while in Ontario, supporters continue receiving their monthly entries automatically—even if they later return to Manitoba, head south for the winter, or are travelling when future draws take place.
July’s Early Bird Draws will be held on July 17 and July 24, with ticket purchase deadlines of 11:59 p.m. CDT the night before each draw. Tickets purchased before any draw deadline remain eligible for all subsequent draws that month, including the July 31 Grand Prize Draw, where one lucky winner will take home 50% of total ticket sales.
The LWDHF 50/50 is a monthly charitable lottery that raises funds to support healthcare at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Every ticket purchased helps fund equipment and enhancements that improve patient care close to home.
